left ventricular mass index and pulmonary artery pressure in patients with the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome
نویسندگان
چکیده
background : sleep apnea is accompanied by some cardiovascular complications. it has even been hypothesized that sleep apnea, itself, can induce some of these complications. given such controversies, we assessed the left ventricular mass index (lvmi) and systolic pulmonary artery pressure in patients with sleep apnea. methods: through convenience sampling, 56 patients with the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (osas) were included in the present descriptive cross-sectional study. patients with any past history of hypertension and diabetes mellitus were excluded. the apnea severity was assessed via the polysomnography-derived apnea-hypopnea index (ahi). all the patients underwent transthoracic echocardiography. in this cross-sectional study - data regarding age, gender, smoking, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, polysomnographic parameters (ahi, severity of disease, mean heart rate, mean oxygen saturation [sao 2 ], lowest sao 2 , and duration of sao 2 below 90% [d.sao 2 < 90%]), and echocardiographic parameters (systolic pulmonary artery pressure and lvmi) were accumulated and processed. results: fifty-two men and 14 women at a mean age of 49.29 ± 11.79 years participated in this study. systolic and was significantly high in the severe group compared with the mild group (128.21 ± 9.73 mmhg vs. 119.23 ± 12.5 mmhg; p value = 0.007). the lvmi was increased parallel to an increase in the severity of the osas, but that increase was not statistically significant (p value = 0.161). the d.sao 2 < 90% was positively correlated with the lvmi, and this relationship remained true after adjustment for the body mass index (r = 0.27; p value = 0.042). c onclusion : severe osas was accompanied by a higher blood pressure. the lvmi did not differ significantly between the patients with the osas and those who did not suffer from other risk factors of cardiac diseases .

متن کاملSubclinical Left Ventricular Dysfunction in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea
OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate whether fragmented QRS (fQRS) is associated with subclinical left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). SUBJECTS AND METHODS A total of 141 patients with OSA who had normal LV ejection fraction (LVEF) were included in the study. The fQRS was defined as the presence of an additional R wave, notching of R or S wave or the ...

Background: It has been implicated that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease including stroke, myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease (CAD) and hypertension. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between OSA and severity of atherosclerosis assessed by angiography. Methods: This study included 337 patients ...
متن کاملThe Impact of Cardiac Rehabilitation on Pulmonary Artery Systolic Pressure and Left Ventricular End-Diastolic Pressure in Patients after Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery
Background:Cardiac rehabilitation program (CRP) is a useful method of modifying cardiovascular risk factors, improving life expectancy and quality of life in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD). The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of cardiac rehabilitation on the pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LV...

BACKGROUND The knowledge regarding myocardial alterations in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in the absence of any known cardiovascular disorders including hypertension is limited. The aim of this study was to assess the early alterations of left ventricular (LV) functions caused by OSAS before the development of hypertension and other cardiovascular manifestations of OSAS...

STUDY OBJECTIVES Conflicting results have been reported regarding the effects of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) on daytime left ventricular (LV) systolic function. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and causes of LV systolic dysfunction, using radionuclide angiography, in a large group of patients with OSAS. DESIGN AND SETTING A prospective study in the pneumology department o...
